The Master of Global Surgical Care (MGSC) at the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine, is an innovative, fully online two-year, 30-credit specialized graduate program. It is designed for interdisciplinary surgical care professionals—such as physicians, nurses, allied health, or administrators—focused on addressing and solving surgical challenges in low-resource and underserved global settings. The curriculum consists of eight core courses (covering international health, disability, disaster response, research methods, rural and Indigenous communities, among others), a 6-credit field practicum (4-8 weeks in an underserved location globally or in Canada), and a 3-credit elective. Students build practical and critical thinking skills for global surgical leadership, program planning, education, research, and disaster readiness. The program includes an optional Canadian Low Resource Settings stream, allowing special focus on rural and remote Canadian health systems. Graduates emerge prepared for leadership in global surgical care within public, academic, NGO, or governmental organizations.
