The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Astronomy at UBC’s Faculty of Science offers both Major and Honours options. The program focuses on applying principles of physics and mathematics to investigate the fundamental nature and evolution of the universe, the properties of galaxies, and the life cycles of stars and black holes. Students learn techniques and instrumentation for observing and collecting astronomical data, and foundational skills for problem-solving in navigation, space flight, and satellite communications. Graduates are prepared for further studies in physical sciences, medicine, law, or education, or roles such as technical support in observatories, astronomy educators, and science outreach specialists. Research and learning are integrated with large international projects, including the James Webb Space Telescope and the Thirty Metre Telescope.
