The Bachelor of Arts (Southeast Asian Studies) at the University of Malaya, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, is Malaysia’s pioneering undergraduate programme focused on in-depth study of the Southeast Asian region. Established in 1975 and updated to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it uniquely integrates comparative and regional perspectives on politics, economy, culture, maritime affairs, environment, and security. The curriculum uses an interdisciplinary approach; students are required to take core courses (including a Southeast Asian language such as Thai, Filipino, Vietnamese, or Burmese), and in their final year, complete a research paper on themes such as politics, economy, socio-culture, performing arts, ASEAN, or urbanization. The programme equips graduates for diverse careers in public, private, and NGO sectors, such as diplomacy, research, market analysis, journalism, and academia. The Department of Southeast Asian Studies is the only department in Malaysia to offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in this field.
