The Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering at the Swanson School of Engineering, University of Pittsburgh, offers two tracks: a professional, coursework-based path for students seeking industry careers and a research, thesis-based path aimed at future PhDs or research specialists. Both tracks require a minimum of 30 graduate credits. The program provides in-depth education in materials processing, structures, properties, synthesis, and advanced manufacturing, preparing graduates to work in sectors including automotive, aerospace, electronics, biomedical, and telecommunications. Core courses cover physical metallurgy, heat and mass transport, materials characterization, and fundamental materials mechanics. Non-MSE elective credits may be approved, and a 3.00 (B) minimum GPA is required for graduation.
