The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia's College of Arts and Sciences offers both a Master of Arts (MA) and a Master of Science (MS) in Environmental Sciences. The program features an interdisciplinary approach, combining ecology, geosciences, hydrology, and atmospheric sciences. Students are trained in fundamental courses—one in each core area—and also conduct original research (especially for the MS). MA candidates must complete at least 30 credit hours (24 coursework at graduate level, including a thesis), while MS candidates also complete a minimum of 30 credit hours with a strong emphasis on independent research. Both programs prepare students for careers in research, consulting, environmental management, policy, and further study at the doctoral level.
