The Bachelor of Arts in English at UC Davis College of Letters and Science develops students' skills in analytical reading, clear writing, and critical thinking. The curriculum includes study across a wide array of media, genres, topics, and historical periods. Students start with foundational courses in writing and the gateway English major series covering 'Literature in English' from early medieval texts through the present. Students then customize their path, selecting courses by interest and completing required units in literature, theory, criticism, and thematic studies. Two specialization tracks are available: Literary Criticism & Theory or Creative Writing. The department emphasizes intellectual flexibility, offers an honors program, and encourages study abroad. Graduates learn to interpret texts within historical, political, and cultural contexts and communicate ideas efficiently and creatively.
