USC Dornsife's Master of Arts in Visual Anthropology (MVA) is an intensive graduate program blending academic coursework in anthropology and visual studies with hands-on training in ethnographic documentary research and filmmaking. Students learn qualitative research methods, contemporary anthropological theory, and ethnographic film history alongside practice-based production skills. The core of the program involves creating an original 20–30 minute ethnographic film as a thesis project using digital media. The MVA can be completed in a full-time 12-month track or over two years for students needing more flexibility. The program emphasizes fieldwork, experiential learning, and cross-disciplinary collaboration with the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
