The Department of Dentistry at the University of Alberta offers a thesis-based MSc in Medical Sciences – Orthodontics designed to prepare dental graduates for a career in orthodontic practice and/or clinical academic roles. The program combines didactic coursework, seminars, a substantial clinical training component, and original research culminating in a defended thesis. Completion of the program qualifies graduates to take the National Dental Specialty Examination (NDSE) in Orthodontics. Students are required to complete at least 71 units of coursework along with their clinical and research responsibilities. Admission is highly competitive, with up to four students accepted per year, and the curriculum includes ongoing clinical and didactic assessment to ensure skill development and readiness for professional certification.
