The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at Northwestern University’s Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science is designed for students at all levels, including those with no previous computing experience. The curriculum introduces students to the algorithmic, systemic, and artificial intelligence perspectives of computing. The program covers foundational programming, systems, theory, artificial intelligence, interfaces, and software development, emphasizing both theoretical knowledge and practical problem-solving skills. Students develop deep expertise across the breadth of computer science and are prepared to design and implement complex software systems, work in teams, and apply computational thinking to a variety of disciplines. Electives allow specialization in topics such as artificial intelligence, computer systems, networking, human-computer interaction, graphics, and more. The program requires 48 total units, including computer science major courses, mathematics, engineering, basic sciences, design and communications, social sciences/humanities, and unrestricted electives.
