The M.A. in Islamic Studies at McGill University’s Institute of Islamic Studies is a research-intensive graduate program emphasizing significant critical engagement with contemporary and historical topics in Islamic Studies. The program develops skills in critical thinking, literature review, and research dissemination, preparing students for further academic work or professional fields. Students choose between the general M.A. track and an option focusing on Gender and Women’s Studies, which requires the master’s thesis to relate centrally to gender or women’s issues. The program leverages McGill’s extensive faculty expertise, strong international atmosphere, and major resources, including one of North America's largest Islamic Studies libraries. Coursework includes advanced seminars, language training (Arabic or Persian at the second-year level as a minimum requirement), and a major thesis supervised by faculty.
