The Master of Music (MM) in Composition at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, is designed for advanced study in music composition, combining rigorous instruction in traditional and contemporary compositional techniques with extensive performance opportunities. The curriculum includes courses in advanced composition, orchestration, counterpoint, history and analysis, and music technology. Students also receive private composition lessons, attend a composition symposium, and are required to complete a thesis (composition portfolio or substantial work) and recitals. The MM emphasizes performance and requires an audition on an applied instrument or voice. The program prepares graduates for professional careers as composers, educators, and researchers.
