Eastman School of Music’s Master of Music in Conducting (Wind Ensemble) is a specialized graduate program focused on developing advanced skills in conducting wind ensembles. The curriculum includes seminars in wind ensemble repertoire, advanced conducting, music history, analytical techniques, graduate ensemble participation, and electives. Students must complete a minimum of 33 credits and maintain full-time status for two consecutive semesters. The program emphasizes proficiency in rehearsal procedure, baton technique, interpretive skill, and requires a strong background in keyboard skills, dictation, sight singing, score identification and analysis. Admission requires the submission of a pre-screening conducting video (two works in rehearsal and two in performance), three letters of recommendation, successful completion of an undergraduate degree in music (typically a Bachelor of Music or its equivalent), and placement tests upon entry. Auditions consist of conducting with an Eastman ensemble, a written exam (music history, analysis, score recognition), and a faculty interview. International applicants must provide evidence of English proficiency via TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo or similar exams. The degree is designed to prepare conductors for a professional career in wind ensemble direction and conducting research.
