The Master of Music (MM) in Early Music at Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, is a graduate program designed for advanced study in the historical performance of early music, especially on historical plucked instruments (such as lute, theorbo, baroque guitar) and harpsichord. The curriculum centers on applied instruction, performance with specialized period ensembles (like Collegium Musicum and Baroque Chamber Music), and courses in areas such as baroque performance practice, continuo realization, lute and harpsichord literature and pedagogy, and relevant theory and musicology. Students have access to a significant collection of period instruments. The program includes master classes with internationally acclaimed visiting artists and offers graduates a pathway to careers in early music performance and education. Graduates regularly join or collaborate with prominent early music ensembles worldwide.
