The Master of Music in Music Education program at Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, is a graduate-level professional degree designed for music educators seeking advanced training and certification. The program offers two tracks: (1) Professional Studies—which can be completed full-time or in four summers—and (2) Initial plus Professional Certification—which is full-time only and leads to New York State teaching certification. The curriculum includes research methods, measurement and evaluation, history and philosophy of music education, pedagogy, applied music, and electives in theory, composition, or orchestration. Students must demonstrate advanced musicianship, breadth of preparation, and (preferably) prior teaching experience. The degree culminates in a comprehensive examination. Alumni are equipped to become leaders in music education and can study with Eastman faculty even in the summer option, ensuring continuity and quality of instruction.
