The MAT in Social Studies Education at the University of Iowa College of Education prepares students with existing bachelor's degrees (in history or a social science) for teacher licensure in grades 5-12. The program is interdisciplinary, combining advanced social studies coursework and professional pedagogical training with hands-on classroom experience. Students complete social studies content requirements and at least 30 semester hours in a major social science subject. A minimum of 6 semester hours must be in advanced (6000 or above) social studies education courses and at least 9 semester hours in graduate-level history or social science coursework.
