The MAT in Social Studies Education at the University of Iowa College of Education prepares students with existing bachelor's degrees (in history or a social science) for teacher licensure in grades 5-12. The program is interdisciplinary, combining advanced social studies coursework and professional pedagogical training with hands-on classroom experience. Students complete social studies content requirements and at least 30 semester hours in a major social science subject. A minimum of 6 semester hours must be in advanced (6000 or above) social studies education courses and at least 9 semester hours in graduate-level history or social science coursework. Graduates are eligible for multiple teaching endorsements such as American Government, American History, World History, Economics, Geography, Psychology, Sociology, and All Social Sciences for grades 5-12.
