The Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies at the University of Iowa equips students with critical knowledge of the history, culture, and contributions of African-descended populations in the United States and the African diaspora. The curriculum requires study in the humanities, social sciences, and performing arts. Students complete at least two introductory courses (Introduction to African American Culture; Introduction to African American Society), core coursework in three topical areas, and electives. The program prepares students for careers or further study in community work, education, government, law, and related fields. It emphasizes critical analysis, research, and understanding of intersectional issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality in African American communities. Students must also meet the university’s world language requirement.
