The Bachelor of Arts in Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies (GWSS) at the University of Iowa is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program that equips students with skills in critical thinking, research, writing, activism, and advocacy. The curriculum explores intersections of gender, sexuality, race, class, ethnicity, and nationality, examining the roles and challenges faced by women, men, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Students reflect on ethical, political, and scholarly frameworks, and train in analyzing how gender and sexuality shape various aspects of life such as culture, media, economy, health, and violence. GWSS majors commonly pursue double majors or minors and go on to careers in policy, government, nonprofits, social services, research, education, law, and business. Required courses include Introduction to GWSS, Diversity and Power in the US, Practicum, theory courses, comparative/global focus, race/ethnic studies, and a research capstone. Honors students complete an additional thesis. The department, established in 1974, has a strong tradition and supports student projects, creative works, and community engagement.
