The BS in Science Studies program at the University of Iowa offers students the flexibility to prepare for careers either in secondary science teaching (with licensure) or in science-related fields without traditional classroom teaching. Students choose primary and secondary emphasis areas from biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics—acquiring in-depth study equivalent to six semesters in the primary emphasis and four semesters in the secondary. The program integrates coursework from science departments, science applications, and the history, philosophy, and sociology of science. Options exist for those seeking teacher licensure (grades 7–12, with endorsements in multiple science disciplines) and those looking towards careers in agencies (DNR, National Park Service, science centers) or further graduate study. The program emphasizes experiential learning and broad field science understanding, preparing graduates for diverse career pathways and leadership in science communication and education.
