The Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies Education at the University of Iowa is a dual-degree undergraduate program designed to prepare students for teaching social studies (history, government, geography, and the social sciences) in grades 5–12. Students earn both a BA in Social Studies Education from the College of Education and a BA/BS in a selected social science from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The curriculum combines coursework in social studies content, pedagogy, and field experiences, emphasizing multicultural perspectives, civic engagement, curriculum design, and classroom leadership. The program is approved by the state of Iowa for teacher licensure with endorsements in multiple social science subjects, maximizing teaching preparation and employability. Students benefit from real classroom experiences from program entry, supportive mentorship, and opportunities for student teaching both locally and abroad.
