The BS program in Geographical and Sustainability Sciences at the University of Iowa’s School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability (SEES) is designed to prepare students for quantitative and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and addressing pressing environmental challenges. Students gain technical competencies in GIS, spatial analysis, and system thinking, and explore how human impacts and environmental feedbacks are closely intertwined. The program offers two tracks: Sustainability Sciences (focusing on coupled human–environmental systems and solutions to challenges like water scarcity and energy efficiency) and Geographic Information Science (emphasizing quantitative data analysis to address environmental questions). The curriculum emphasizes hands-on experiences including research projects with faculty mentors, fieldwork, real-world data analysis, and career-focused internships. Graduates are equipped for careers in sustainability management, GIS analysis, public policy, environmental consulting, and further graduate studies.
