The Bachelor of Arts in Translation at the University of Iowa's Department of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures, and Cultures is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program focused on developing high-level proficiency in translation between English and another language. It requires a minimum of 120 semester hours, including 33 semester hours specific to the translation major. Students gain experience in translating across professional, literary, legal, medical, and technical contexts, building global literacy, research skills, and preprofessional competencies. The curriculum features gateway and foundation courses, workshops, a seminar, electives, outreach and engagement activities, and a capstone course. Active proficiency in a second language and advanced coursework in that language are required. Upon graduation, students are prepared for careers as translators and language mediators or for further graduate study in translation.
