The Master of Arts in History at Boston University's College of Arts & Sciences is a terminal graduate degree designed to prepare students for careers in teaching, research, museums, or further academic study. The program emphasizes comprehensive methodological and historiographical training. Students complete eight courses (32 credits) covering a broad range of historical periods and regions, including dedicated courses in European, American, and African historiography, as well as a research seminar titled 'The Historian’s Craft.' A research paper, reading proficiency in a modern foreign language, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 are required. The program is typically completed in two years of full-time study. Admitted students may transfer in up to two relevant graduate-level courses. Those with strong performance may apply to the PhD program but admission to the MA does not guarantee PhD entry.
