The MA in African American Studies at Boston University’s Graduate School of Arts & Sciences is an intensive, research-focused program designed to develop conceptual and research skills for lifelong critical investigation of cross-cultural interactions, with a primary focus on African American experiences and global Black diaspora. The program emphasizes intersectional approaches to issues of race, gender, sexuality, and immigration, situating African American studies in a global and comparative context. Students complete courses on black thought, ethnic and minority relations, African American history, and five elective courses, alongside requirements for language proficiency and the production/defense of two major research papers. Graduates pursue higher academic studies and a variety of professional roles engaged with diversity and inclusion.
