The Master of Comparative Law program at Emory University School of Law is a one-year graduate degree designed primarily for lawyers trained outside the United States, especially those interested in comparative and international legal systems. The program, currently offered in partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University-KoGuan Law School, gives students an opportunity to study both Chinese and U.S. legal systems through coursework at both institutions. Students begin with a semester at KoGuan Law School in China (minimum 8 credits, including courses taught by Emory faculty), followed by full-time study at Emory Law in Atlanta during the spring (13 credits) and a summer term (5 credits). The curriculum includes required courses such as Introduction to the U.S. Legal System, American Legal Writing, U.S. Courts and Oral Advocacy, and a Capstone in Comparative Law, with electives available in fields like Business Associations, Contracts, Criminal Law, Family Law, Health Law, Intellectual Property, and International Law. The program emphasizes both academic depth and practical legal skills, equipping graduates for international legal careers or advanced study.
