Candler School of Theology’s Master of Theological Studies (MTS) is a graduate academic program designed for individuals passionate about rigorous theological scholarship, teaching, or interdisciplinary research related to religion, theology, and society. The MTS is suitable for those preparing for doctoral work, teaching, non-profit leadership, or public policy analysis, and offers three main areas of focus: 1) History, Scripture and Tradition of Christianity; 2) Modern Religious Thought and Experience; and 3) Global Religions. Students complete a combination of core courses, a research methods seminar, a capstone seminar (with thesis or portfolio options), and significant electives, often drawing from the broader university and the Atlanta Theological Association. The program is typically completed in two years, with flexible elective options and required advising throughout the course of study.
