The BA in African American Studies at Emory College of Arts and Sciences offers an interdisciplinary liberal arts education, focusing on the histories, cultures, and political movements of Black communities in the United States and the African Diaspora. The program engages students in research, writing, and critical thinking through core courses in the humanities and social sciences, as well as specialized courses in civil and human rights and diaspora studies. Students participate in first-year seminars, writing-intensive classes, undergraduate research, and capstone projects, and benefit from mentorship by distinguished faculty. The degree prepares graduates for a wide range of fields including law, education, business, medicine, and public service. Notable resources include the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives & Rare Book Library and programs of the James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race & Difference.
