The Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) at Brown University is an undergraduate degree program based in the liberal arts. Students may choose from over 80 possible concentrations, which are similar to 'majors' at other institutions. Brown's Open Curriculum gives students significant freedom to shape their own education, requiring only completion of at least one concentration, 30 courses in eight semesters, and demonstrated writing competency. There are no general education requirements. The curriculum provides ample opportunity for interdisciplinary study, experimentation, and synthesis across fields, engaging students deeply in their chosen areas of focus and encouraging development of communication, critical, and analytical skills. Students graduate with strong expertise in at least one area, complemented by broad-based learning and skills.
