The Bachelor of Arts in International and Public Affairs (IAPA) – Security Track, offered at the Thomas J. Watson Jr. School of International and Public Affairs, Brown University, is a multidisciplinary undergraduate program that examines the causes and prevention of violence in societal contexts, with a special focus on local, national, and international security issues. Students acquire foundational knowledge through a common core and pursue specialized coursework in the Security Track, analyzing the origins of violence, policing variations, power relationships, and the impact of technology on security. The program emphasizes seminar-based learning, advisor support, experiential opportunities, and research assistantships. Students must complete 11 courses, including a core curriculum, a track foundational course, five security-focused electives, and both qualitative and quantitative methodology, with optional language instruction substituting for one methodology course. The curriculum prepares graduates for roles in policy, research, and security analysis, or for further studies in related fields.
