The Bachelor of Arts in South Asian Studies at Brown University's Thomas J. Watson Jr. School of International and Public Affairs is an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree. The program explores the history, cultures, languages, religions, politics, and societies of South Asia—including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Afghanistan—as well as the South Asian diaspora. Students blend coursework in the humanities and social sciences and can focus on specific countries, themes, or disciplines (history, economics, religion, political science, language). The program emphasizes comparative, multidisciplinary approaches, with coursework designed to foster understanding of South Asia's diversity, contemporary issues, and global connections. Students complete 10 courses in the concentration, including:• 2 humanities-focused South Asia courses (e.g., art, religion, literature)
• 2 social sciences-focused South Asia courses (e.g., politics, history, economics)
• 6 electives, at least 3 from an approved list with significant South Asia content (at least 25%), with a maximum of 2 electives outside the approved list if theoretically relevant. A proficiency in a South Asian language (such as Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, or Persian) is required, demonstrable via coursework, examination, or proof of native ability. Up to two language courses can count toward the degree electives. Honors students must complete 12 concentration courses total. (See official course list for options in each category.)
