The Bachelor of Arts in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the Thomas J. Watson Jr. School of International and Public Affairs, Brown University, is an interdisciplinary program that prepares students to understand the complex histories, cultures, and contemporary issues of Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Latinx diaspora. The curriculum incorporates courses from different departments, including politics, history, anthropology, cultural studies, and languages, offering students analytical tools and diverse perspectives. Students customize their studies through elective tracks, participate in experiential learning such as internships and research, and complete a capstone project. The concentration requires students to complete at least ten relevant courses, demonstrate language competence in a regional language (e.g., Spanish, Portuguese, French, Haitian Kreyol), undertake internship/service work, and produce a capstone thesis or project. The program fosters critical thinking, encourages challenging assumptions, and prepares graduates for careers in international relations, development, advocacy, or graduate studies.
