The Bachelor of Arts in Middle East Studies at Brown University, administered through the Center for Middle East Studies within the Watson Institute of International and Public Affairs, is an interdisciplinary undergraduate concentration (major) designed to foster an in-depth understanding of the Middle East region. The program emphasizes language study, foundational and methodological coursework, multidisciplinary area studies, and student-led research. Students are expected to develop proficiency in a Middle Eastern language (e.g., Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish), engage with topics ranging from ancient to contemporary Middle East, and participate in innovative, engaged scholarship. The curriculum is intentionally flexible, allowing individualized study plans that accommodate focused interests across humanities and social sciences.
