The Education, Society, and Culture M.A. program at UCR is a research-based master's that prepares students to become teacher-leaders or continue their studies in a Ph.D. program. Emphasis is placed on understanding historical, social, racial, cultural, and institutional factors affecting education, especially those impacting access, opportunity, and educational inequality. Students study with expert faculty in fields like teacher education, urban schooling, educational equality, and youth community engagement. The curriculum consists of at least 36 units, including courses such as Theories and Issues in Literacy, Sociology of Education, History of American Education, Qualitative Methods, and specialized electives. Coursework can transfer directly to UCR’s Ph.D. in Education. Classes are held once a week in late afternoons.
