Georgetown University's Master of Arts in Art & Museum Studies is a one-year graduate program designed to unite the academic study of art museums with direct museum practice. Students work closely with Georgetown art history faculty and museum professionals in Washington, DC, as well as specialists at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London or New York. The curriculum includes courses in museology and art history, practicum experiences in museum education and curatorial practice, and internships at leading DC museums (e.g., Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Portrait Gallery). The program examines evolving relationships between academic art study and museum exhibition practices, including technology, audiences, education programs, and ethical considerations. Students complete 10 courses (30 credits) and an internship, choosing between spring study at Sotheby’s Institute or at Georgetown, capped by a summer internship and capstone workshop.
