Georgetown University's College of Arts & Sciences offers the Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) in Interdisciplinary Studies (IDST). This unique self-designed major allows undergraduates to create a personalized academic program centered on major research questions that require approaches drawn from at least two distinct disciplines. Students develop their major during sophomore year, with guidance from two faculty mentors and an overseeing dean. The curriculum consists of 12-14 approved courses spanning introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels from the chosen disciplines. Students must complete an introductory interdisciplinary research course, a capstone or senior seminar, and a senior thesis or project that synthesizes their interdisciplinary inquiry. The major emphasizes independence, research skill development, and integrating multiple perspectives.
