The Bachelor of Arts in Japanese at Georgetown University's College of Arts & Sciences offers comprehensive training in both spoken and written Japanese, integrated with studies in Japanese culture through classical and modern literature, linguistics, history, philosophy, the visual arts, and popular culture. Students are expected to engage in four years of Japanese language study, regardless of their entry level, and most courses are conducted in Japanese. The curriculum includes at least one JAPN course taught in English, in addition to 'East Asia: Texts and Contexts,' with a strong emphasis on cultural immersion, often including a semester or year abroad in Japan. The capstone is a Senior Seminar with a thesis paper (25+ pages), and high-performing students may write an honors thesis. The program encourages participation in co-curricular activities like the Japan Network, and access to rich resources including extensive Japanese collections at libraries and museums.
