Georgetown University’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts in Spanish & Portuguese Studies. The major requires ten 3-credit courses, covering advanced Spanish and Portuguese language mastery, courses in literature and culture, linguistics in both languages, and upper-level electives. Students begin at a level determined by placement exams; those below advanced proficiency will require additional language study. Majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad in Spain, Portugal, or Latin America for a semester or academic year, to deepen language immersion and cultural understanding. The program is designed to equip students with high linguistic competence and critical cultural literacy across Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking societies.
