The International History (IHIS) major at Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service provides an interdisciplinary education that examines historical change across regions and themes beyond national boundaries. Students learn to critically analyze global events in historical context, using methodologies from history, political science, sociology, anthropology, and economics. The program emphasizes the development of research, analytical, and writing skills and prepares students to interpret the influence of the past on today’s global challenges, such as pandemics, authoritarianism, and calls for racial and environmental justice. Students design an individualized concentration, combining required core courses with elective seminars and develop expertise in specific themes or regions, such as US-China economic relations, imperialism, or environmental history. The curriculum includes core SFS requirements, the HIST 3105 foundational course, five thematically focused concentration courses (with at least one outside the history department), and two additional electives. Honors candidates must meet GPA requirements and complete an honors seminar and thesis.
