The Black Leadership in Social Work field of practice at Boston College School of Social Work is a specialized track within the Master of Social Work (MSW) program. It adopts an African-centered approach geared toward equipping students to engage, support, and lead within Black communities by preparing them to tackle anti-Black racism, foster collective action, and apply strength-based, anti-oppressive, and anti-racist values. This curriculum includes targeted courses such as “Re-thinking Diversity,” “Afrocentric Organizations,” and “History of Activism in Black Communities,” with supplemental monthly cohort meetings and field practicums supervised by experienced practitioners. The program aims to develop clinically and macro-focused practitioners prepared to address complex issues facing individuals, families, and communities of the African diaspora through culturally responsive leadership and practice. Admission is cohort-based and highly competitive, limited to about 20 fellows per year, fostering a supportive environment centered on community and collective identity.
