The Master’s program in Computer Science at EPFL offers a specialization in Computer Science Theory (renamed Foundations of Computing from Autumn 2025), focused on the theoretical and mathematical principles of computer science. This specialization is ideal for students interested in algorithms, computational complexity, formal methods, cryptography, and data science theory, and is designed to prepare graduates for careers in research, cryptographic systems, formal verification, and doctoral studies. The 2025 reform in the program now organizes Master’s studies around at least four 8-credit core courses from distinct research domains. The specialization includes advanced coursework in theoretical computer science, cryptography, advanced probability, learning theory, and related topics. Coursework is combined with research projects and elective modules, and the program offers excellent prospects for progression to PhD study and research-intensive careers.
