The Legal Research (LLM) program at Utrecht University's Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance is an advanced two-year research-oriented master's degree designed for students aspiring to academic or high-level research careers in the legal field. The curriculum includes compulsory courses covering the dynamics of constitutional, administrative, criminal, human rights, international, and private law, complemented by modules on legal methodology from comparative, doctrinal, and empirical perspectives. Students conduct multiple supervised research projects and complete a 30 ECTS master's thesis. Electives, internships, and the flexibility to tailor research topics across legal disciplines allow individualized academic exploration. Graduates gain advanced legal analytical skills, a solid foundation for PhD studies, and strong preparation for careers in academia, judicial bodies, law firms, NGOs, or governmental organizations. The program is taught in English, with some research and thesis options in Dutch, and starts annually in September.
