Stony Brook University’s Master of Arts in Biological Sciences, with concentrations in Applied Ecology or Applied Evolution, is based in the Department of Ecology and Evolution—internationally known as a pioneering department in its field. The program provides in-depth training in both core ecological/evolutionary theories and quantitative/statistical methods. Students select a concentration (either Applied Ecology or Applied Evolution) and work with faculty advisors to tailor coursework and research to individual interests and career objectives. The Applied Ecology track prepares graduates for roles in environmental agencies, NGOs, consultancy, and public/private sector positions requiring ecological expertise. The Applied Evolution track equips students with genetic, evolutionary, and population analysis skills, suitable for technical roles in biotechnology, forensics, biomedicine, conservation, and related fields. The program emphasizes hands-on experience, including lab work, field study, data analysis, and topical seminars. Many graduates proceed to doctoral studies or professional scientific careers.
