The MSW Program at Stony Brook University's School of Social Welfare prepares students for advanced generalist practice with a focus on community organizing, community development, and political social work. The Community and Political Social Action specialization deepens students’ abilities to analyze and address the root causes of social problems, emphasizing political advocacy, activism, and enabling social workers to become elected officials. The curriculum includes a generalist foundation year, followed by specialized courses and practicum experiences in the second year. The program is committed to social justice, anti-oppressive practice, and prepares graduates for leadership roles in transforming social, economic, and political systems to eliminate poverty, foster social equity, and promote human rights. Graduates meet the academic requirements for the LMSW and LCSW license exams.
