Stony Brook University's Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS) major offers a professional BS program within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. It prepares students for quantitative careers in business and industry, equipping them with mathematical techniques and problem-solving strategies grounded in probability, statistics, operations research, and actuarial mathematics. Students often combine AMS with related majors or minors (e.g., Computer Science, Economics, Information Systems). The curriculum consists of lower-division foundational courses (calculus, linear algebra, programming), upper-division core and elective AMS courses (including advanced probability, statistics, and mathematical modeling), and a writing requirement. Accelerated BS/MS and BS/MPH tracks are available for eligible students. The degree requires approximately 46 AMS-relevant credits and may involve summer or honors research projects.
