The Bachelor of Science in Marine Sciences at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), Stony Brook University, is a highly interdisciplinary undergraduate major focusing on the biology, physics, and chemistry of the ocean. Students gain a foundational understanding in basic biology along with the physical and chemical processes in marine environments. Upper-division electives allow students to deepen their study in areas such as marine microorganisms, algae, invertebrates, fish, marine mammals, and a variety of coastal and oceanic habitats—from salt marshes to the open ocean. Experiential learning through field and laboratory courses is encouraged, with opportunities for research, internships, and study abroad. Hands-on experience may include research on Long Island’s coastal waters and use of field stations, laboratories, and research vessels.
