The Research Master's in Urban Studies at the University of Amsterdam Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences is a two-year, multidisciplinary research program that addresses the challenges and opportunities created by global urbanisation. Students are trained to analyze complex urban changes through courses in urban geography, economic geography, planning, and sociology. The program combines rigorous methods training, thematic electives, and significant independent research, with a major focus on international comparative studies and empirical fieldwork. Year 1 is primarily based in Amsterdam, while Year 2 includes a semester abroad at one of 20+ partner universities worldwide. The curriculum emphasizes critical, comparative analysis of urban phenomena, preparing graduates for doctoral programs or research-intensive careers in academia, policy, or consultancy.
