JDTS is an English-language, research-oriented master’s program jointly operated by the Faculty of Letters at Kyoto University and the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) at Heidelberg University. Students spend one year at Kyoto and one year at Heidelberg, supervised by faculty from both, and submit a single thesis for a joint degree. The program explores transculturality through theoretical and methodological approaches from diverse humanities and social sciences fields, addressing how cultures interact, transform, and entangle across historical and contemporary contexts. Students select one of three interdisciplinary foci: Society, Economy and Governance; Knowledge, Belief and Religion; Visual, Media and Material Culture. The curriculum integrates lectures, seminars, colloquia, and research skill intensives, emphasizing academic writing and critical empirical research. Graduates are prepared for international academic careers.
