The Master of Laws – Legal Institutions (LL.M.-LI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School is a course-based program for students who already hold a law degree, typically from outside the United States. The program provides an in-depth understanding of American law, legal institutions, and common law analysis. Students complete two required core courses and choose electives from the JD curriculum to reach 24 credits. The curriculum emphasizes foundations in US law, constitutional structure, legal research and writing, and selected substantive law areas. Graduates are prepared for advanced legal practice, academia, and may qualify to sit for a US bar exam in select jurisdictions. The program admits students for both spring and fall, and instruction is entirely in English. The LL.M.-LI is undergoing a transition and may be titled simply 'LL.M.' but retains its course-based, practice-oriented structure.
