Penn State's internationally recognized Materials Science and Engineering program gives students broad interdisciplinary training in the structure, processing, properties, and performance of materials—including ceramics, metals, polymers, and composites—with strong connections to advanced research and real-world applications. The ABET-accredited program emphasizes hands-on experience, small class sizes, and access to cutting-edge laboratories and equipment. Students engage with fundamentals of chemistry, physics, and engineering to understand and manipulate the atomic-to-macroscale characteristics of materials. Graduates are prepared for diverse careers in technology, manufacturing, biomedical, energy, aerospace, electronics, and more, or for further study in graduate programs.
