The BS in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering at Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences is an ABET-accredited undergraduate program designed to provide students with the scientific and engineering fundamentals necessary for professional growth in the energy sector. The curriculum integrates mathematics, earth sciences, and engineering with application to traditional and emerging topics in petroleum and natural gas extraction, production, transport and storage. Students are trained through a mix of theoretical instruction, case studies, and project-based design, preparing them for roles in drilling, production, reservoir characterization, and evaluation, as well as for graduate study. The program fosters a strong grounding in experimentation, engineering judgment, project feasibility, and environmental and economic considerations, and includes opportunities for broad general education tailored to students’ interests.
