The Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies at Penn State's College of the Liberal Arts develops students’ critical understanding of the cultural, historical, political, and social experiences of African Americans. The program blends interdisciplinary approaches to explore the ideas, institutions, movements, and artistic expressions that emerged from Black communities in the US and the Diaspora. Coursework covers history from the colonial period to the present, mechanisms of racial inequality, and strategies for resistance and survival. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for careers or further studies in academia, public service, law, and related fields. Students gain a foundation in theory, research skills, and cultural competency through a blend of classroom work, research, and internships with social justice organizations.
